Tucson translator honored with international culture award in Paris
From the esplanade of the magnificent Palais de Tokyo in Paris, visitors can see the Eiffel Tower, the Trocadéro, and the never-ending parade of boats up and down the Seine. Elisabeth Jaquette, a translator from Tucson, has been awarded an international culture award in Paris. She heads Words Without Borders, which aims to bring work written in other languages to audiences who read in English. The organization identifies significant work written elsewhere in the world and publishes samples of it. These samples are free and freely available on its website. Since its founding in 2003, WWB has published and posted work by over 4,500 writers and translators from 147 countries in 148 different languages. Jaquett has also translated seven full-length translations, including a collection by Sudanese author Rania Mamoun and a novel by Jordanian Taghreed Najjar.
