Arizona football celebrates 100 Years of “Bear Down” as Iowa State visits for Homecoming

A century after John “Button” Salmon's famous words, Arizona celebrates 100 years of “Bear Down” with a homecoming rematch against Iowa State University. The University of Arizona is set to host Iowa State University for its homecoming game on Oct. 24 at Casino Del Sol Stadium in Tucson. The game marks the 100th anniversary of the phrase, "Bear Down," coined by John "Button" Salmon, the 1926 quarterback for the Arizona football team and a catcher for the baseball team. The phrase has been the university's motto since then, representing the perseverance and spirit Arizona strives to uphold. The first homecoming match took place on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 1914, when the Wildcats defeated Pomona College. Since 1948, Arizona and Iowa State have met four times, winning four times and losing twice.
