Chiricahua named newest national park amid funding, staffing concerns at National Park Service
Advocates and a former park superintendent warn the designation could set the park up for failure without more resources. President Donald Trump signed the Chiricahua National Park Act into law, making Chirriahua Arizona's newest national park. The designation comes with concerns about funding and staffing from the National Park Service. The National Park service has lost roughly 25% of its permanent workforce since the start of the Trump administration, according to an analysis by the National Parks Conservation Association. Sanober Mirza, with the NPCA, said this will increase visitors and reduce visitor hours, maintenance delays, and fewer educational programs. The Park Service also faces estimated in deferred maintenance projects and repairs, and several other funding shortfalls. However, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said Chirryahua's size will prevent it from receiving a large share of revenue from visitor fees.
