Reel Talk: How Rumble in the Bronx made Jackie Chan an international star
Rumble in the Bronx is a good introduction to one of the world’s most enigmatic action stars and three decades since release, remains one of the more important films in the introduction of American audiences to Hong Kong cinema. The article discusses the rise of Jackie Chan to fame following the death of Bruce Lee in 1973, when Hong Kong needed a new star and a new direction. Chan and Sammo Hung, who both worked their way up the ladder at Golden Harvest, found fame through their innovative kung-fu films that emphasized comedy, acrobatics and stunt work. Hollywood noticed their rising star in The Protector, which was violent, mean-spirited and lacked the ability to channel Chan's best traits. Chan would return to Hong Kong and make numerous excellent action films throughout his career. In 1995, Quentin Tarantino introduced Jackie Chan with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MTV Movie Awards. The article also includes a review of several films by Arrow Video in the "Jackie Chan's Breakout Hits!" 4K collection.
