TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly and State Sen. Priya Sundareshan met with solar industry leaders Friday to celebrate the nearly $11 billion federal clean energy investment and incentives awarded to the state in 2021.

With Arizona being the sunniest state in the country, there are thousands of solar jobs and more than 300 companies, but the event made it clear that it goes much deeper than the jobs.

“We’re talking about thousands, maybe 11,000 good paying jobs that you can actually raise a family on,” Kelly said. “But it’s not just about getting jobs, this is about solving this climate crisis.”

Ricardo Silva is an operations manager for and believes what they do helps the community, along with small businesses, and he said everyone wants to be a part of solar energy.

“We constantly get called,” Silva said. “Like, hey are there more positions? Are you planning to grow? Where are we going next?”

And he added that the solar energy industry offers a variety of jobs.

“Even though it’s just solar, it’s not really just solar,” Silva said. “You’re developing electricians, you’re developing roof workers, you develop everything in the construction industry, and it just makes a stronger community right?”

According to the 2023 Clean Jobs America annual report by Environmental Entrepreneurs, the Tucson metro area alone saw an increase of over 1,000 jobs in renewable generation, which includes sectors like solar and wind.

Kelly got to tour the solar gain facility and learn how their office and operations run.

Following the tour, he spoke alongside solar experts and advocates.

And one solar homeowner from Tucson highlighted that his electricity bills greatly benefitted from the switch to solar.

Adrian Keller, Arizona program director at Solar United Neighborhood, emphasized that as heat and energy costs continue to rise in Arizona, it’s time to “double down, and keep the momentum going.”
