Tim Steller’s column: Tucson legislator gets threats, dishes abuse
For Star subscribers: The New York Times featured a Tucson legislator as an example of an elected official receiving threats and intimidation. She and her team have dealt it, too. Tucilla legislator Alma Hernandez, a Democrat and outspoken supporter of Israel, has received threats and abuse from both sides of the political spectrum, following a New York Times story about threats against her and her supporters. The Times article stated that the threats had come from the far left and far right of the spectrum, and her brother Daniel, who is Jewish, said much of it stemmed from antisemitism. Despite these statements, Hernandez did not directly address specific instances of alleged intimidation or abuse by her or her supporters or her close supporters. In another incident, during Daniel Hernandez’ 2025 campaign for Congress, someone shot out the window of a staffer’s car outside Alma’s home where Daniel was meeting with staff. The Hernandez siblings, including sister Consuelo, form the core of an alternative political bloc in Southern Arizona and have been in conflict with the progressive wing led by Grijalva and Tucson Mayor Regina Romero.
