Walking dead: Tucson says 'boo' to cars on Congress for Halloween pedestrianization pilot
Congress Street is set to become a pedestrian-friendly gathering place on Halloween night, as the city plans to close part of the street to vehicle traffic to give revelers more room to celebrate. Downtown Tucson's Congress Street is set to become a pedestrian-friendly gathering place on Halloween night, as part of a pilot program to improve pedestrian safety and allow for increased foot traffic. The move is expected to benefit businesses and create a safer area for people walking between destinations. The city's deputy director of Transportation and Mobility, Jenn Toothaker, said pedestrian safety was a primary consideration in planning the closure. The Sun Link streetcar will continue operating along Congress Street during the closure, while bus routes will be rerouted to accommodate the event. The closure will remain in effect until 3 a.m. Nov. 1, allowing the pedestrian zone to remain in place through the late-night Halloween festivities.
