The PJ Bidwell Band Talks “Culebra,” Tucson and the Stories Behind the Song
Tucson songwriter PJ Bidwell discusses “Culebra,” a borderland murder ballad, its collaborative recording, and the stories and musicians behind the new single. The song "Culebra" was co-written with longtime friend Eric Cunningham and released October 16 by Tucson songwriter PJ Bidwell. The murder ballad is an arrangement of nylon-string guitar, steel, electric guitar and trumpet. The song was written with the intention of capturing the stories of lives caught in the violence and exploitation of the borderlands. It also reflects the community around The PJ Bidworth Band, who have developed the song onstage over several years, and a studio collaboration in Tucson, which was the group's most ambitious production to date.
