A conviction for health care fraud carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine

TUCSON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Linh Cao Nguyen, MD, pleaded guilty to health care fraud and is scheduled to be sentenced in May.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Nguyen admitted that he participated in a scheme for years to defraud multiple health care programs.

Nguyen also knowingly caused thousands of false billing claims to be submitted as part of his scheme, prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, the fraudulent claims identified a doctor as the treating provider, when in reality another provider, such as a nurse practitioner, social worker, unlicensed psychology intern or wound care specialist, provided the service independently.

By billing for the medical service as if it had been provided by a doctor, Nguyen falsely inflated the amount his company was supposed to pay for the service, prosecutors said.

He also admitted that the damage he caused was at least $3.7 million and agreed to pay compensation to private insurance companies totaling over $1 million.
