TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - As part of our Searching 4 Solutions series, the city is turning to smart traffic signals to help reduce congestion on Tucson's busy surface streets, but The city of Tucson is using smart traffic signals to reduce traffic congestion on its busy surface streets, with over 70% of the city's traffic flowing through intersections controlled by traffic signals. The city has installed smart technology at over 90 of its roughly 450 signals and uses cameras mounted on signal arms to detect traffic in real time and adjust signal timing based on where traffic is flowing. The technology adjusts signal timing to give drivers more green time where it's needed. However, expanding the technology citywide remains a challenge. The long-term goal is to expand smart signals to nearly every intersection.
