A man was shot and killed by police during a long standoff in a domestic violence incident that involved a firearm, Tucson police say.

The incident started about 10 p.m. Wednesday evening at a house in the 7300 block of East Calle Merida, near East Broadway and South Kolb Road, Tucson police said in a Facebook post.

Officers learned he had access to several weapons, had been drinking and had a history of metal illness, police said.

An officer with advanced training in crisis intervention and hostage negotiation arrived and took over communication with the man.

At one point, the man tried to enter a vehicle near an exterior door of the home, but he ran back inside after a police dog and a less-than-lethal tool was used by officers to keep him out of the car, police said.

Police say the man could be heard yelling, breaking glass and displaying erratic behavior. He also appeared to have injured himself.

After several hours the man came to the door holding a firearm that he raised in the direction of the officers.

Life-saving efforts were immediately started at the scene, but the man died at the hospital, police said. The man has not been publicly identified.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has been activated to handle the criminal investigation, with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department taking the lead.
