Top county election official in southern Arizona to step down
He said he’s leaving the department after only six months for personal family reasons. Cochise County Elections Director Tim Mattix has resigned due to personal family reasons. His resignation will go into effect on April 20. Mattix oversaw the Presidential Preference Election, which saw no abnormalities in the results. Marisol Renteria has been appointed as interim elections director. This is the third time in Cochise County that has resigned since November 2022.

BISBEE, AZ (AZFamily) — The head of elections for Cochise County is calling it quits.
Cochise County officials said on Tuesday that Elections Director Tim Mattix submitted his resignation, which will go into effect on April 20.
Mattix oversaw this year’s Presidential Preference Election, for which a hand count audit showed no abnormalities in the results.
He said he’s leaving the department after only six months for personal family reasons.
“I am greatly disappointed that I will not be able to continue in this role,” Mattix stated in his letter of resignation. “I was hoping to have provided stability for the elections department through the 2024 elections season. I have tried to lay a foundation for the department to continue to improve operations and make enhancements into the future.”
Cochise County Administrator Richard Karwaczka said Mattix’s decision to step down was entirely personal and said he didn’t “experience any disruption, intimidation, or threats during this election cycle.”
Marisol Renteria was appointed as interim elections director. She has 13 years of experience in Cochise County elections.
Mattix is the third elections director in Cochise County to resign since November 2022.
