TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — Heart disease is the number one killer in Pima County according to Dr. Theresa Cullen.

Major factors that link to heart disease are:

• Smoking is a major contributor. There are many opportunities to support people in their desire to quit smoking.

• Dr. Cullen says being male puts you at risk as well as family history. Know your family history to stay ahead of any complications.

According to Dr. Cullen, the people that are most at risk of developing heart disease are middle aged men 45-65.

She also says Hispanic and African American men seem to be at higher risk possibly because of genetics and increased stress.

Stress can raise blood pressure, reduce chances of sleeping well and getting exercise.

Significant number of Pima County residents have high blood pressure but don’t know it.

High blood pressure is known as the silent killer because some people feel fine but still have raised blood pressure.

Dr. Cullen recommends knowing your number. She says you can get checked at a machine at the pharmacy or go to the clinic.

If your blood pressure is elevated, she says you should seek care to see if you have true high blood pressure so you are able to get medication to help control it.
