Tucson Electric under fire as it seeks more renewable energy, along with gas plants

For Star subscribers: Tucson Electric Power has out put its biggest call for renewable energy resources yet, but has drawn criticism for proposing more gas plants in its long-term future. Tucucino Electric (TEP) has been criticized for seeking more renewable energy, along with gas plants, in an effort to offset coal plant retirements and increase use of variable wind and solar energy. The company hopes these resources will support the use of these resources to offset retirements of coal plants and support greater use of renewable energy. TEP spokesman Joe Barrios stated that the process will need to consider several key questions including cost, impact on customer bills, reliability, and how soon can it start providing service to customers.

“Those new resources will help offset coal plant retirements and support greater use of variable wind and solar energy,” TEP spokesman Joe Barrios said. “With each all-source request for proposal, we'll need to consider several questions throughout the process. How much will a new resource cost? What kind of impact might it have on customer bills? How will it support reliability, and how soon can it start providing service to customers? We need to balance a number of considerations.”
