U of A engineering seniors pursue rookie spot on “Battlebots” TV show

Six UA College of Engineering students are constructing a 250-pound battle robot, capable of causing serious destruction, to compete in a TV show. U of A engineering seniors, Wait, a mechanical engineering major and the weapons lead, have applied for a spot on the upcoming “Battlebots” TV show with around $47,000 in funding. The project has been funded by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona and the College of Engineering’s Craig D. Berge fund, with the Berge Fund accounting for a combined $10,000 of the total. The team was invited to compete in an exhibition match during the ‘Battlebots Destruct-A-Thon” series in Las Vegas during May.

In addition to being the weapons lead, Wait, a mechanical engineering major, also is in charge of fundraising and ordering materials. The project has around $47,000 in total funding, with the Associated Students of the University of Arizona and the College of Engineering’s Craig D. Berge fund accounting for a combined $10,000 of the total. An additional $1,000 of the funding comes from Regents Professor Michael Marcellin and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as the International Telemetry Conference.

After completing their application to the “Battlebots” show in February, Hurworth said the team was contacted by one of the producers in March. Hurworth said the producer liked their application, but asked that they add a flamethrower to their design. Hurworth also said the producer invited the team to compete in an exhibition match during the “Battlebots Destruct-A-Thon” series in Las Vegas during May.
