Tucson Now: Doug Burgum speaks on Colorado River cuts
Secratary of Interior Doug Burgum sits down exclusively with Payton May. Top White House official, Secratary of Interior Doug Burgum, has spoken about the controversial decision by Gov. Katie Hobbs to join Nevada in a lawsuit over the Colorado River management, calling it unhelpful and unlikely to succeed. Burgum argued that the seven Basin states, plus tribes and Mexico, already have an agreement covering water distribution for the next two years to protect critical infrastructure. He also highlighted the investment of over $3 billion by the administration in Lower Basin water infrastructure since 2025, including over $600 million for Arizona. He suggested that an El Niño expected to bring heavier rain and snow this year could allow for more favorable allocations, and that innovation like desalination will solve long-term shortages.
