Despite having the advantage in both shots and possession, FC Tucson turned in a dismal performance on Tuesday night in their home opener. The men of the Old Pueblo lost the match to the visitors from Capo FC 1 - 3.
Things started poorly for the home side. Capo’s Kalani Delarole scored on his team’s first possession.
There was a chance to even things up moments later and, in a sense, start the match over again from even. João Belmudes, one of FC Tucson’s midfielders, got taken down by Capo’s Sidney Dina in the box. Belmudes earned a penalty kick, but his try hit the crossbar.
To make matters worse, Capo scored again in the 23rd minute. An initial shot was batted away by Tucson’s Alex Sventanoff, but Capo’s outside forward Rocco Bon collected it for a second shot that found its way home.
FC Tucson’s offense proved ineffective even though they had more time with the ball than their opponents. Crosses into the box were easily intercepted. Attackers who managed their way into the final third were muscled into runs away from the box. Shots were often right to Capo keeper Carlos Gonzalez.
A ray of hope came deep into the second half when Elian Aguilar slipped a shot from wide into Capo’s goal.
The home side was unable to build on the goal, and Delarole scored again in the closing moments of the match.
It was a frustrating result, not least of which because Capo made the most of the few chances they had.
“We started slow and it cost us throughout the game,” said coach Sebastian Pineda after the match. “We had to fight back…Capo works hard defensively and we created the chances but we couldn't put it in.”
Particularly frustrating was Belmudes’s penalty kick miss in the opening moments of the match. It would have reset not only the score, but likely would have changed the way Capo would have had to play the first half.
“It's part of the game,” said Pineda. “I think he has taken one hundred and two of them. We have to see one of them, so I think it’s just the type of night that it was.”
FC Tucson faces off with Redlands FC on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Kino North Stadium.
